We at WMSF believe that these proposals will have a negative effects on student's achievements in this subject. This is largely because the teaching of major topics of the core mathematical skills (the pure maths part) will be less focused when taught as part of an applied unit. Furthermore, the applied courses will be fragmented and thinly spread. The last item of concern is that it will be harder for students to sit their first exam in January (as they can now)- this could hinder the confidence of weaker students as obtain their first set of results befor embarking on their second year. Also, It will be harder for Further Maths students to change to A Maths as some of the units are not shared between the two courses as they are now. There will be less flexibity overall.
