About Bowland Maths

Bowland Maths began in 2006 with the aim of promoting context-rich problem solving through curriculum and assessment materials and through Professional Development (PD) for teachers. The first collection of material comprised 18 classroom projects and five PD modules. These were released in 2008, with a DVD made freely available to all secondary schools in England. Assessment tasks and two related PD modules were released in 2010; eight classroom projects were added in 2012. All of the Bowland Maths materials can be downloaded from the website and they are free for non-commercial educational use.

In 2012 Bowland Maths designed and implemented a Lesson Study project in collaboration with Japanese maths education experts. The Bowland Maths Lesson Study project introduced new methods for professional development of secondary school mathematics teachers by adapting a Japanese Lesson Study approach; it was implemented in nine schools during 2012-2013 and our collaboration with the team in Japan is on-going.
