MEI helps ASDAN to develop its Mathematics Short Course

Posted: 15/07/2014

MEI has been working with the awarding organisation, ASDAN, on the development of a new version of the ASDAN Mathematics Short Course. This is now available for use (see
http://www.asdan.org.uk/courses/programmes/mathematics-short-course).

The course accredits up to 60 hours of maths-related activities. It is aimed at young people of all abilities, particularly those aged between 13 and 19 who have yet to achieve grade C or better in GCSE Mathematics. It offers opportunities to develop understanding of the main topics in GCSE Mathematics and apply the key attributes of Functional Skills Mathematics; representing, analysing and interpreting. It encourages an alternative, practical approach, which can help to motivate learners though the development and recognition of skills and certification. The flexibility of the course allows it to be carried out in a variety of settings, over a time period to suit the individual or centre.

A sample copy of the student book is available to download from the ASDAN website at http://www.asdan.org.uk/downloads/download/Mathematics%20SC-Sample.pdf. A set of accompanying Mathematics Short Course tutor notes has been produced with challenge-by-challenge advice, lesson ideas and suggested resources.
