Role

Jeff Trim is a National Coordinator for the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme, which is managed by MEI. He is the course leader for the Teaching Discrete Mathematics course. He also has oversight of the AMSP teacher networks.


Background

After graduating in Mathematics from Exeter University, Jeff trained as a secondary teacher in Reading, continuing to live and work in the area, including 12 years as Head of Mathematics in a large comprehensive school, followed by 8 years as Director of Specialism for Mathematics and Senior Teacher. In 2005 he also became a Further Maths Network Centre Manager and subsequently a Further Mathematics Support Programme Area Coordinator before joining MEI in 2014 as a member of the FMSP Central Team.


Specialisms

  • Designing and delivering professional development courses for teachers of A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics
  • Teaching and providing professional support for Discrete and Decision Mathematics
  • Coordination of large and small scale enrichment events encouraging students to take mathematics beyond GCSE
  • Teaching and training via an online classroom environment for nationally and internationally located participants

  • Teaching Mathematics in secondary schools and colleges across the 11-19 age range

  • Leadership and development of Mathematics specialism projects and community outreach
  • Staff development at all levels; supporting trainees, NQTs, new staff, experienced teachers, subject leaders and aspiring senior leaders
  • Designing and delivering professional development courses for a wide range of A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics topics
  • Authoring textbook and teaching file resources for A level Mechanics
  • Contributing to the Open University teacher training programme materials
  • FMSP Area Coordination providing enrichment events, professional development events, access to tuition and guidance to schools and colleges
  • Providing module-specific professional development through online courses
  • Delivering Problem Solving courses for KS4 and KS5 teachers
  • Regularly presenting sessions on Discrete Mathematics, Mechanics, Further Mathematics and the history of mathematics at the MEI conference
