Two-day course: Starting to Teach Core Maths

This course is designed for teachers currently teaching any one of the new Core Maths qualifications, or teachers wishing to prepare for teaching a new Core Maths qualification.  It is based on MEI’s post-16 curriculum development work, funded by the DfE, which was used to inform the development of all the Core Maths specifications.  The course covers general themes such as the effective use of discussion.

Aims

  • To help teachers to familiarise themselves with the teaching approach and classroom practise for Core Maths
  • To build teachers’ confidence in promoting and influencing effective discussion
  • To provide an introduction to some useful resources for teaching Core Maths
  • To enable teachers to plan an engaging and relevant lesson

Course Programme

Day 1 :   Preparing to Teach Core Maths:
The day starts with a quick examination of some of the possible barriers to the success of Core Maths and how, in the aims, ethos and teaching approach, we can attempt to address these barriers. Building on this, we look at a free resource to see how the aims and ethos translate into classroom practice and teaching approach. We look more deeply at how to use discussion effectively, and finish by planning an actual lesson using another of the free resources. There is a gap task.

Day 2:    Assessment and Exploring the Wider Context:
The day starts by discussing the question: what makes a good answer? Building on this theme we examine two resources and in each case ask what would make a good answer, and how will this influence the way in which we teach. We look at planning another session, but this time adapting the resource to tailor a lesson to your students. In the final session the experiences of the two days are drawn together.
