We have collaborated with The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) to provide opportunities for discussion of important ideas about the use of mathematics in the workplace.
In May 2007, MEI and IET held a conference entitled Attracting the best students of mathematics into engineering. This was an invitation conference which considered why so few of the best mathematics students take up engineering degrees and enter the engineering profession. The conference also considered how the Further Mathematics Network might help to improve take up of engineering. View the report of the conference.
On 1 June 2009 MEI and IET held a conference entitled The uses of mathematics in the engineering workplace. One of the themes of the conference was to develop exemplars showing mathematics being used in engineering workplaces, and the importance of ensuring that these exemplars may be readily used in school and college classrooms.
