Ofqual report on GCSE Mathematics SAMs published

Posted: 22/05/2015

MEI welcomes strongly the publication of Ofqual’s research into the suitability and relative difficulty of the Sample Assessment Materials (SAMs) for the new GCSE Mathematics, for first teaching from September 2015.

MEI has been very concerned about the quality and comparability of the SAMs  for the new GCSE Mathematics qualifications, previously published by the examination awarding organisations.  We are very pleased that Ofqual took the concerns expressed by the mathematics education community so seriously and has responded so thoroughly.  We now hope that new SAMs will be published by the awarding organisations as soon as possible.  It is of crucial importance that the new SAMs are of comparable difficulty and address the three assessment objectives (‘Use and apply standard techniques’; ‘Reason, interpret and communicate mathematically’ and Solve problems within mathematics and other contexts’) in a way that reflects properly the intentions and spirit of the reformed GCSE Mathematics.
