Introducing problem-solving into the Key Stage 4 curriculum

Introducing problem-solving into the Key Stage 4 curriculum is a free Professional Development course funded by the London Schools Excellence Fund, and being offered by MEI to teachers in London schools wanting to develop strategies for introducing problem-solving into their GCSE classes at all levels.

The ability to think mathematically, breaking problems down into logical steps and solving them efficiently, is widely recognised as a highly desirable skill in higher education and industry. The development of strong mathematical thinking skills will gives students more confidence in approaching problems and has been shown to result in improved attainment. Students who are more confident and have good problem-solving skills will find that they have a much improved chance of reaching their full potential.


  • To highlight the need for strong mathematical thought processes in students in order that they are able to solve a variety of mathematical problems.
  • To provide teachers with the skills and strategies needed to effectively prepare their students for the problem-solving requirements of their final examination.
  • To encourage the use of a variety of problem-solving activities in Key Stage 4 mathematics classrooms in order to enrich the experience of students in mathematics lessons.
  • To introduce and assess a range of problem-solving materials designed for Key Stage 4 students.

Sustained professional development

Preparation for course:

  • Reflection on the problem-solving activities that currently take place, the materials used and their effectiveness.

The follow up online sessions and gap tasks will allow teachers to reflect on:

  • Their own problem-solving skills
  • The quality and use of different problem-solving materials
  • The benefits to their students of embedding problem-solving in their day to day teaching.

All delegates who attend the initial course will be invited to a summer problem-solving conference that will allow teachers to plan how they will develop a culture of effectively providing a scheme of work that develops mathematical thinking in their students.


Delegates will be provided with a booklet of problem-solving resources, teaching points, hints and solutions.


This course is aimed at all teachers of Key Stage 4 Mathematics and will contain materials suitable for all levels of attainment.

Course fees for successful applicants will be covered by the London Schools Excellence Fund. Cover costs are not included.
Up to two teachers from each school or college may attend.
