Y10-7 Mentoring

Year 10-7 Peer Mentoring Intervention

MEI has developed an engaging set of resources to help students make a positive start with maths in KS3 by involving Year 10 students in mentoring Year 7 students.

These resources are particularly designed to support Year 7 students who haven't met age-related expectations in maths and demonstrate a lack of confidence; however, they can also benefit other Year 7 students, and the Year 10 mentors, by raising confidence and addressing gaps in knowledge and understanding.

The materials include activities, games and resources for the students to make. The games, which are designed to take between 5 and 10 minutes, are based around follow-me (loop cards), and matching and sorting activities. They are played by the pairs of students during sessions lasting between 15 and 30 minutes, once or twice a week, depending on the flexibility of the timetable. Guidance for the Year 10 mentors supports mathematical talk and suggests questions to promote thinking and to make links to known facts and strategies.

The materials cover key aspects of KS3 maths, including:

  • Place Value
  • Measures
  • 2D shape
  • Calculation
  • Fractions

Please find below a sample of the resources taken from the Place Value topic:

The resources can be used as part of other intervention to support Covid recovery even if arrangements in schools for September prevent students from different year groups working together.

The cost of access to online training and downloadable resources is £300 per school.

The cost of a one-day face-to-face training session for teachers and mentors is £600 plus expenses. For academic year 2019-20, this includes access to the resources online.
