This half term’s issue is dedicated to Professor Malcolm Swan, who died in April 2017 at the age of 64. Professor Swan was described by the Mathematical Association as “one of the most respected and influential mathematics educationalists of recent times.”
Some of our staff members have written articles for this special issue, each describing a particular aspect of mathematics education connected with Malcolm and explaining how that had an impact or influence on the writer’s own thinking or development as a practitioner, and how it has fed into their current work. We hope that this reflection helps to demonstrate Malcolm’s impact on vast numbers of members of the mathematics teaching profession.
Carol Knight’s classroom resource (at the end of the magazine) comprises ‘starter’ activities ‘in the style of’ the Shell Centre resources.
