A new academic year is the ideal time to give some thought to your professional development options for the year ahead.
MEI is now in its second year of managing the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP). This DfE-funded programme offers support for state-funded schools and colleges to improve the uptake and teaching of advanced maths, including an extensive range of free professional development opportunities. In many case subsidies are available towards course fees, travel costs and teacher cover.
You can view all of these opportunities on the AMSP website, but here’s a small selection to give you a flavour:
Problem Solving in Post-16 Maths conferences provide support for teachers of AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics to embed higher-level problem-solving skills in the classroom. Delegates can tailor their conference experience by choosing from optional workshop sessions, such as Problem solving with data sets, Using technology to solve problems at A level and Problem solving in university entrance examinations. The first conference is in Bristol on Wednesday 16 October, with two to follow in London and Manchester later in the autumn.
Raising Confidence with Reasoning in the GCSE Classroom delves into the best strategies and ideas to use to support the development of reasoning from KS2 through to GCSE. These one-day courses start at venues throughout England on 11 October and continue into December.
Live Online Professional Development (LOPD) is an innovative series of courses that explore a range of topics for teachers of GCSE Mathematics, Core Maths, AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. They involve ‘meeting up’ in an online classroom for weekly sessions with the course leader and other participants, each lasting around 60-90 minutes. This enables you to interact and share ideas and resources, without having to take a whole day away from school or college. Most LOPD courses will begin at the end of September and continue for between four and twelve sessions.
Discover Quadratics and Discover Trigonometry are designed for those new to teaching GCSE Mathematics. These courses aim to improve subject knowledge in these key Higher Tier topics, and enhance confidence in teaching them to students.
These are just some of the options available. To find a course near you, visit the full directory of AMSP events. There are more than 150 to choose from!>
