Free webinar series: Supporting Key Stage 2 to 3 transition in maths

Posted: 02/12/2020

We’re presenting a series of free ‘Supporting Key Stage 2 to 3 Transition in Maths’ webinars to explore the teaching of different areas of the maths curriculum across Key Stages 2 and 3.

These webinars highlight the progression in curriculum and pedagogy in each mathematical area across the Key Stage 2-3 transition. Reference is made to the new guidance materials - ‘Teaching mathematics in primary schools’ and to supporting resources from the NCETM, including examples from the NCETM Secondary PD materials. There’s a focus on the key representations used in primary schools and how they support pupils in gaining a deep understanding of the concepts that will allow them to make progress as they move on to secondary school.

The next webinar in the series will be on Thursday 21 January and will focus on Ratio. The remaining dates are:

  • Tuesday 23 March – Statistics
  • Tuesday 18 May – Algebra
  • Thursday 24 June – Angles
  • The webinars all run from 16:00 – 16:45. If you can’t make it live, recordings will be available.

Full details are available on the KS2-3 Transition page of the MEI website, where you can also access recordings of the first two webinars, which focus on Place Value and Fractions.

Finally, here is the problem we posed in MEI’s November primary newsletter. We challenged readers to send us a representation to explain the pattern that can be found when exploring these numbers. We’d love to hear from you by email or on Twitter @MEIMaths or @AlisonHopperMEI.
