Phil Chaffé is a National Co-ordinator for the Advanced Maths Support Programme which is managed by MEI. He has particular responsibility for student and teacher support for university admissions tests.
Phil initially trained as an engineer, working in energy and thermodynamics for two consulting engineering firms, before completing a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics in 1990. Phil taught Mathematics for several years in a variety of 11-18 schools including 10 years as the head of a large mathematics department. He has since worked as a Mathematics Advisor and a FMSP Area Coordinator in Staffordshire and Shropshire and at Warwick University. Whilst in his advisory role, Phil lead several A level courses for Phillip Allen Updates and Keynote Education. In 2012 Phil joined MEI as a member of the central team for the Further Maths Support Programme. He has had a number of consultancy roles whilst working for MEI. These include, writing and leading the developing mathematical thinking at Key Stage 4 and 5 courses for the London Schools Excellence Fund and developing a MOOC and support materials for Imperial College for students aiming for A* in A level maths. In 2014/5, Phil was the maths lead for the University of Warwick’s iPGCE. Phil has a great deal of experience in preparing students for university mathematics admissions tests. He developed the Problem Solving Matters course that runs at Oxford University, Warwick University, Durham University, Imperial College and Bristol University. Phil is currently responsible for the AMSP higher level problem solving programmes.
