The AMSP provides a wide range of A level Mathematics professional development, offered in flexible formats to suit your needs and availability. Many of these opportunities are free, and, in some cases, additional subsidies are available to enable more teachers to participate.

The Events Calendar provides details of all of our professional development events. You will also find a range of opportunities that are designed and delivered according to local needs. You can also contact your local Area Coordinators for more information.

Below is a list of our national Core Maths professional development opportunities.

Course length 6 month(s)

Discrete maths features in all AS/A level Further Mathematics specifications, albeit under different titles:

  • Discrete Mathematics – AQA and OCR A
  • Decision Mathematics – Edexcel
  • Modelling with Algorithms – OCR B (MEI)

Teaching Discrete Mathematics (TD) is an extended professional development course for teachers wishing to build their confidence in teaching this content, and covers the discrete maths material common to all AS level Further Mathematics specifications.

TD consists of:

  • Eleven live online tutorials
  • Two compulsory study days
  • Access to course-specific teaching and learning resources on Integral (MEI’s learning platform)
  • Email support from tutors and access to an online group forum

Towards the end of the course a short assignment is issued, for which support and guidance are provided. Course certificates will be available for those participants completing the assignment.

TD is a new streamlined course replacing the previous courses TD1 and TD2; therefore, it is unsuitable for teachers who have already completed these courses.

Course length 6 month(s)

Teaching Further Mathematics 1 (TFM1) is an extended professional development course for teachers wishing to develop their own subject knowledge and classroom practice in teaching A level Further Mathematics. It covers at least the pure material common to all AS level Further Mathematics specifications.

TFM1 consists of:

  • 11 live online tutorials
  • Two compulsory study days
  • Reference texts to support your studies
  • Access to course-specific teaching and learning resources on Integral (MEI’s learning platform)
  • Email support from a tutor and access to an online group forum

Participants will have the option to certificate by submitting an assignment at the end of the course.

Following completion of this course, participants will be eligible to study TFM2, which includes the remaining pure content common to all A level Further Mathematics specifications.

Course length 6 month(s)

Teaching Further Mathematics 2 (TFM2) is an extended professional development course for teachers wishing to develop their own subject knowledge and classroom practice in teaching A level Further Mathematics. It covers the pure material common to all A level Further Mathematics specifications.

TFM2 consists of:

  • 9 live online tutorials
  • Two compulsory study days
  • Reference texts to support your studies
  • Access to course-specific teaching and learning resources on Integral (MEI’s learning platform)
  • Email support from a tutor and access to an online group forum

Participants will have the option to certificate by submitting an assignment at the end of the course.

TFM2 is the second unit of the TFM course. In order to enrol on the TFM2 unit, participants must have already completed the first unit, TFM1.

Course length 6 month(s)

Teaching Statistics 2 (TS2) is an extended professional development course for teachers wishing to further build their confidence in teaching statistics. TS2 covers most of the statistics content from all major specifications for AS/A level Further Mathematics.

TS2 consists of:

  • 11 live online tutorials
  • Two compulsory study days
  • A reference text to support your studies
  • Access to course-specific teaching and learning resources on Integral (MEI’s learning platform)
  • Email support from a tutor and access to an online group forum

Towards the end of the course a short assignment is issued, for which support and guidance are provided. Course certificates will be available for those participants completing the assignment.

In order to enrol on the TS2 course, participants should have a reasonable understanding of the statistics content of AS/A level Mathematics, ideally through having completed TS1 although this is not compulsory.

Between them, the TS1 and TS2 courses cover the majority of the content of A level Statistics.

Course length 11 session(s)

Teaching Mechanics 2 (TM2) is an extended professional development course for teachers wishing to build their confidence in teaching mechanics. TM2 covers the mechanics content from all major specifications for AS/A level Further Mathematics.

TM2 consists of:

  • Eleven live online tutorials
  • Two compulsory study days
  • Access to course-specific teaching and learning resources on Integral (MEI’s learning platform)
  • Email support from a tutor and access to an online group forum

Towards the end of the course a short assignment is issued, for which support and guidance are provided. Course certificates will be available for those participants completing the assignment.

In order to enrol on the TM2 course, participants should have a reasonable understanding of the mechanics content of AS/A level Mathematics, ideally through having completed TM1, though this is not compulsory.

Course length 3 study days over 6 months

The best heads of departments inspire through passionate teaching. They also genuinely care about developing the team they lead and are able to maintain a wider perspective on students’ educational experiences as a whole. This sustained professional development course is suitable for any new or aspiring head of mathematics who wishes to reflect upon this demanding role and learn strategies to increase their own effectiveness.

Course length 4 Session(s)

Subject Knowledge Live | A level Further Maths: Pure Foundations is a live online professional development course in our Subject Knowledge Live suite. The synchronous sessions will concentrate on the modelling of subject knowledge delivery including the use of technology and will cover content from all major specifications for A level Further Mathematics. Examples of pedagogy will be modelled by the tutors and participants will be encouraged to share their approaches. This is a foundation course designed to support teachers who are new to teaching Further Maths and will concentrate on four key topics which underpin the compulsory Pure content of AS Further Maths.

Course length 1 day(s)

This one-day course supports teachers in understanding how best to assist their students with the transition to undergraduate study, and how to prepare them for the mathematical expectations of university admissions tests.

What are the mathematical expectations of universities for students starting their courses? Mathematical skills are important for many undergraduate degree schemes. This course will explain what indications of mathematical ability universities are looking for when they receive a UCAS application. It will also give up-to-date information about admissions tests. The number of entry exams required by universities has risen in the past few years. Some are compulsory, while some simply reduce entrance requirements. There are 11 admissions tests that have mathematical content, and these are for a variety of subjects. This course will explain what support students will need in school and where else they can access support to ensure that they gain the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed.

Course length 7.5 hour(s)

Course length: One half-term, weekly sessions

Key Stage 5 Coordinator Development is a live online professional development course: the synchronous sessions will concentrate on the challenges of leadership in a maths department and will frequently tap into the experience of both tutors and participants. Examples of active learning in A level Maths and Further Maths and Core Maths will be modelled by the tutors and participants will be encouraged to share their approaches in a workshop discussion.

Course features:

  • Five online sessions, approximately weekly, each up to 90 minutes long
  • Access to course-specific teaching and learning resources in our Integral online platform
  • A year of access to resources and recordings of the live sessions

Course length 1 day(s)

One-day professional development conference, designed to support teachers of AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

Course length 1 day

Our Further Mathematics Conferences explore engaging ways of teaching Further Mathematics and provide insight into supporting students with university admissions tests.

The conferences offer a range of different sessions aimed at teachers with different levels of experience. There’s something for all teachers of Further Mathematics, including sessions on pure maths, mechanics, statistics and discrete maths, as well as advice on preparing students for university admissions tests.

Our Teacher Network meetings are organised around the country by our local Area Coordinators. They focus on sharing good practice, professional development and promoting developments in teaching and learning.

Meetings usually take place once each term after school and the agenda for each meeting is set by the network members. Joining one of these networks can be a great way to get to know other mathematics teachers in your region and share ideas. It also gives members the chance to request input on particular curriculum areas or educational developments which can be provided by inviting expert speakers to present at a meeting.

PD Videos

Our PD videos provide ideas for how overarching themes and technology can be incorporated into AS/A level Further Mathematics lessons
