MEI offers a range of support to teaching practitioners supporting post-16 learners who are working towards achieving grade 4 or better in GCSE Mathematics.
We offer courses in Teaching Functional Skills Mathematics, Teaching GCSE Mathematics and Strategies for teaching resit GCSE Mathematics. We can also deliver courses on embedding maths in vocational teaching and learning that can be tailored to specific vocational areas.
If you’re a new or aspiring maths lead, we recommend our course for Leaders of Maths in Further Education and Work-based Learning.
Our free contextualisation toolkit, funded by the Department for Education (DfE), supports maths-specialist and vocational teaching practitioners to develop their own contextualised teaching and learning resources for post-16 GCSE Mathematics. Much of the content is also relevant to Functional Skills.
We have also developed a series of video clips and guides to support the Education and Training Foundation’s Maths Pipeline Programme:
You might also like to take a look at two free guides, one for maths teaching practitioners and one for employers, that suggest ways in which young people can be helped to see the relevance of maths to the workplace, and to practise using maths skills during work experience placements. These were funded by the DfE and are designed to support 16-19 Study Programmes(including Traineeships), but may also be relevant to apprenticeships.
