Government confirms new programmes within overall AMSP funding of £8.2m annually as part of the government’s Plan for Change. Support will be provided to improve girls’ participation in advanced maths and give them the opportunity to progress into AI-related careers.

DfE funding announcement

Earlier this week, the Department for Education announced £8.2m of funding for the AMSP, including a programme to boost girls’ participation in maths, with the aim of supplying the AI careers pipeline and supporting young people to develop the skills needed for the jobs of tomorrow. More details about how the funding will benefit both schools and teachers can be found in the DfE’s press release.

Changes to the AMSP

The funding announcement confirms the scope of the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme from 1st April 2025. The AMSP will continue to offer a wide range of professional development for teachers of maths, Core Maths and A level resources, Further Mathematics tuition, Work Groups and programmes in conjunction with the NCETM, and support for trainee teachers. More details about these opportunities, and the other areas of the programme can be found on our webpage about changes to the AMSP.

Three new programmes for schools/colleges and students

The recently announced funding means that the AMSP is now able to offer three new programmes designed specifically to support students, and particularly girls and those in schools with high levels of disadvantage, to progress in advanced maths and beyond.

Girls’ Progression to A level Maths

A programme for up to 200 schools where the A level Maths gender gap is wide to address the issue and increase girls’ participation at A level. AMSP Local Leads will work closely with school leaders and maths teams in these schools to develop evidence-informed strategies to increase girls’ participation.
