Programme Overview

Support for Year 12 and Year 13 students to develop their mathematical skills and confidence and aim for an A* in Mathematics or Further Mathematics.

The programme supports state-funded students develop their mathematical understanding, problem-solving skills and confidence through masterclasses, online courses, tutoring and support from university STEM mentors.

The programme is part of The Hg Foundation’s work to widen participation in maths-related degrees and careers.

Student will receive:

  • Two in-person masterclasses
  • Two online courses
  • Online tutoring sessions
  • Support from university mentors

Through masterclasses, online courses and tutoring students will strengthen their preparation for competitive maths-related degrees.

Everyone is here for a reason. They’re all ambitious. They all want to get good grades. I mean, when you’re surrounded with such motivated people it makes you also feel like you want to achieve the same level standard. And it just pushes you to go farther. And that really builds your self-esteem, builds your confidence.

Programme participant

How it works

In-Person Masterclass

Students will attend two in-person masterclasses at a partner university. They will work with MEI and university staff, explore challenging mathematics and meet other students taking part in the programme.

Online Maths Courses

Student will complete two online courses hosted on edX. The courses cover carefully selected A level Mathematics topics and introduce more challenging ideas to stretch your mathematical thinking.

Online Tutoring

Student will take part in online tutoring sessions on MEI’s learning platform, Integral. Sessions are led by current university students studying a range of STEM subjects.

University Mentoring

Students will receive support from university mentors with challenging school topics, university applications and interview preparation. They also have the opportunity to learn more about university study and STEM subjects.

University Partners

The mA*ths and Further mA*ths Programme is delivered in partnership with universities across the England each with their own eligibility criteria and application process.

Imperial take students from across the Uk and run Year 12 and Year 13 A level maths and Further maths programmes.

Teacher MA*ths and Further MA*ths Programme

Each university has a different criteria for their version of the programme. At a minimum students must be attending a state-funded school or college, they will then need to visit the university web pages for further eligibility criteria.

Students must be capable of achieving a grade A or A* at Mathematics or Further Mathematics and any additional criteria set by the university.

Originally developed by MEI through a partnership with Imperial College London, the programme is now part of The Hg Foundation’s work to widen participation in maths-related degrees and careers.
