The Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP) aims to increase participation in Core Maths, AS/A level Mathematics and AS/A level Further Mathematics and to improve the teaching of these qualifications.
Through our ongoing leadership and delivery of this major DfE-funded programme, we’re making it possible for more students to benefit from a level 3 maths education, regardless of their location, gender, ethnicity, or background.

Teacher ADVANCED MATHEMATICS SUPPORT PROGRAMME
Higher Level Maths Achievement Programme
AMSP’s Higher Level Maths Achievement Programme runs in partnership with the Maths Hubs, for up to 400 schools with a high proportion of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, and focuses on ensuring students with high prior attainment at Key Stage 2 go on to achieve Grades 7-9 at GCSE. The programme comprises an AMSP local lead working with the school to share best practice, a Maths Hub Work Group and student support days.

Girls Progression Programme
The Girls Progression Programme is designed to address the A level maths gender gap and increase girls’ participation at A level. The AMSP has funding for up to 200 schools to participate. Selected schools will work closely with Local Leads to identify the issues that are preventing their female students from progressing to A level maths and help implement evidence-based strategies to overcome them.

Maths into AI
The Maths into AI programme is designed to raise awareness and understanding of AI and related areas such as data modelling and its applications for teachers of level 3 maths and computing. It aims to equip teachers to promote AI careers to their students. Students will also have a chance to learn directly about the role of maths and statistics in AI and machine learning through our student courses. This programme aims to support up to 360 teachers and 450 students over the academic year.

About the programme
Funding and Management
The AMSP is funded through a Department for Education (DfE) contract awarded to MEI after a competitive tendering process.
Collaboration with Other Programmes
The AMSP collaborates closely with two other DfE-funded initiatives: the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and the Maths Hubs. Together, these programmes provide comprehensive support for maths teachers in England to benefit students.
Evolution and Expansion
The AMSP originated from an early 2000s MEI initiative to support the uptake of AS/A level Further Mathematics. Over the years, it has expanded to include support for Core Maths and AS/A level Mathematics. This growth highlights how a small pilot project can evolve into a significant national programme impacting maths education.
