How can we make mathematics teaching an attractive career? What’s your view?

Posted on in News

MEI has published a discussion paper on recruiting, developing and retaining mathematics teachers in England. The paper is designed to stimulate discussion to inform approaches to addressing challenges in these areas for mathematics at all levels.

We focus predominantly on changes that could make mathematics teaching an attractive career, not only to address secondary mathematics teacher recruitment shortages, but also to improve teacher retention and career progression.

The paper has four sections:

  1. Recruiting people into mathematics teaching
  2. Professional development for mathematics teaching
  3. Career pathways for mathematics teachers
  4. Strategic leadership of mathematics teaching

Each section includes discussion prompts and requests for evidence.

We hope the ideas and questions in this paper will generate discussion and stimulate thinking on how we can develop the national mathematics teacher workforce our young people need to support national and individual success.

Please let us know your thoughts by clicking the button below, and responding to our discussion questions.
