Exploring Data with Technology

Exploring Data with Technology is a collection of activities aimed at mathematics students in Key Stage 3 or 4. The aim of the activities is to give students an experience of exploring real data sets using a statistics program. All the activities use CODAP (Common Online Data Analysis Platform: https://codap.concord.org/). This web-based data analysis tool is designed for school students.

Each activity has a presentation, teacher notes, CODAP files and handouts (activity 1 only) which can be downloaded as a zipped folder. They are designed to take approximately 2 hours. Activities 2 and 3 can be used as the basis for a longer piece of investigative work.

The three activities are:

1. Classifying penguins: classifying the species of a penguins based on body measurements.

2. Understanding life expectancy: exploring which features of countries are associated with higher life expectancy.

3. Exploring weather data: comparing the weather from weather stations around England and exploring how the weather has changed since 1970 at a single weather station.
