All lessons in the Introduction to Data Science course involve coding activities that can be accessed in Python notebooks, a web-based programming environment. Participants in the course do not need any previous coding experience as all the commands used are given. They will interact with activities by copying, pasting and editing existing code.
Identical notebooks are available on two platforms:
- Kaggle: this free platform is suitable for those unfamiliar with notebooks and support materials are provided below.
- Google Colab: if you use Google workspace for education you might prefer to use Colab. Colab is also suitable for students under the age of 16.

Guidance on the safe use of Kaggle
To use Kaggle, students will need to create their own account by registering on the Kaggle website and should read Kaggle’s terms and privacy statements.
Students should also:
- Should not make any of their notebooks Public. They should only share Private notebooks with other users that they know.
- Our advice is that students under the age of 18 do not interact with discussions or forums on Kaggle.
- If students wish to engage in a discussion or forum they should not divulge any personal information.
Students under the age of 16 will need consent from a parent or guardian to use Kaggle. This will require the parent or guardian to create an account and then complete a consent form.
