Year 7 Get Calculating! lesson plan – Construction site

This is a lesson to support Year 7 students in becoming more familiar with some key features of calculators and encourage appropriate and effective use.

The activities can be used in isolation or across several lessons. A PowerPoint to support the activities is also available.

The lesson contains a series of activities which broaden the range of functions used on the calculator and involve different aspects of mathematical reasoning around the topic of constructing shapes. The main aim of this lesson is to highlight the need to make informed decisions about the equipment to use to solve a given problem. The activities are designed to draw attention to the selection of tools as well as to provide opportunities for students to become more familiar with common mathematical tools.
