Vicky Pope

Vicky Pope has been Chair of MEI since September 2019. She is also on the Contracts, Remuneration, Board Recruitment and Development committees and a Task and Finish Group reviewing board governance.

She had a long and varied career in the Met Office and worked for many years on climate change. She led the development of some of the best climate models in the world and later ran the Met Office Hadley Centre Climate Programme, acting as the interface between scientists and government and other key stakeholders including the media. Her last role was Head of Science and Technology Futures and member of the Met Office Government Services Senior Management Board.

Vicky is now an honorary Professor at the Science Technology Engineering and Public Policy Institute at University College London and is developing a portfolio career as a non-executive director and consultant. She is an independent member of one of the Boards supporting Welsh government. She is also a Trustee of BRE Trust (Building Research Establishment), the Devon Wildlife Trust and In2ScienceUK. She is a member of the ERSRC Science Advisory Team for Mathematics. Vicky is also joint Editor in Chief of Climate Resilience and Sustainability.

Vicky is passionate about enabling informed choices to be made about the future of the environment and sees improved literacy in science and maths as being central to this.

Charlie Stripp

MBE

Charlie has been Chief Executive of MEI since 2010; since March 2013 he has also been Director of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM).

Charlie gained a BSc in Mathematical Physics at Nottingham University. After working for three years in the finance industry he changed direction and took a PGCE in Mathematics and Outdoor Education at the University of Exeter in 1990. He taught for 10 years in the state sector, with experience of teaching in both selective and non-selective secondary schools, and in a large further education college, teaching GCSE Mathematics, AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, IB Mathematics and Maths Access courses for adults. He has also taught on a Mathematics B.Ed programme.

He joined MEI in 2000 to set up the pilot project that eventually became the Further Mathematics Support Programme. He became MEI’s Chief Executive in 2010.

Charlie has been an active member of the Mathematical Association (MA) for over 20 years, including serving as Chair of the MA’s Teaching Committee and as a member of the MA Council. He was President of the MA in 2024/25.

Through his work with the NCETM, Charlie has also developed experience in primary mathematics teaching, particularly in ‘maths teaching for mastery’ approaches.

Charlie was awarded an MBE for services to education in 2015.
