E-learning Website Developer (PHP/Moodle)

Location:Home-based, with some degree of flexibility over working hours. It will be expected that the person appointed will travel to occasional meetings at MEI’s expense, some of which will be held at MEI’s offices in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.
Rate of Pay:The salary is circa £28,000, consideration will be given to level of experience.
Contract:The post is offered initially until 31 August 2019 with the possibility of extension.
Hours:It is envisaged that the role will be full-time but part-time work is a possibility and applications are welcome on that basis (please indicate this in any application).

Job description

About this role

This home-based position is to contribute to the technical development of MEI’s Integral platform, based on Moodle, for online mathematics support and resources. It will involve working with other developers and academics to enhance and extend Integral in supporting thousands of teacher and student users. To this end, this role will include making best use of native Moodle functionality and available plugins/themes as well as the development of bespoke solutions through PHP/Javascript/HTML/CSS, building on the Moodle core.

The role will involve working closely with MEI colleagues involved in several strands of MEI’s work.

Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI) is a national mathematics education charity that aims to enhance mathematics education and promote links between education and industry. Much of MEI’s work involves the development of mathematics curricula; the provision of professional development for teachers; and the development of teaching and learning resources. MEI also manages national programmes to enhance mathematics education, including the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP), a government-funded programme that provides universal access to students who wish to study AS/A level Further Mathematics.

Outline of the main aspects of the role

Working as part of the MEI’s Integral team and with other MEI colleagues to carry out some or all of:

  • Supporting the development of bespoke solutions for Integral in PHP/Javascript/HTML/CSS building on the Moodle core.
  • Developing MEI’s use of existing Moodle functionality for Integral
  • Developing MEI’s use of Moodle plug-ins
  • Developing MEI’s use of Moodle themes and working with graphic designers to improve visual aspects of Integral
  • If the successful candidate has relevant experience, supporting the development of mathematics resources and supporting the use of BigBlueButton for live online sessions.
  • Attending Integral team meetings and Moodle development group meetings
  • Contributing to the strategic development of Integral


The person appointed to the post will need to be flexible and the exact nature of the role will take account of the experience and strengths of the successful applicant.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Experience with Moodle websites at an advanced level, including using Moodle themes (HTML/CSS) and plugins
  • Proficiency with PHP/Javascript/HTML/CSS including building on the Moodle core
  • Experience with UX development
  • Strong communication skills
  • High levels of self-motivation and enthusiasm
  • The ability to think creatively and recognise opportunities
  • The ability to meet deadlines and work without direct supervision
  • The ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent organisation and interpersonal skills
  • The desire and commitment to provide excellent service

Desirable

  • Some web design skills
  • General experience of the pedagogy of online learning
  • Experience with live online classrooms
  • Mathematics knowledge up to and including A level Mathematics
  • An interest in mathematics and/or education
  • An appreciation of MEI's work and philosophy

Location: MEI Office, Trowbridge, UK

Location:The role may be home-based but it expected that the successful applicant will be able to travel to MEI's offices in Trowbridge, Wiltshire periodically too.
