A level maths entries exceed 100,000

Posted on in News

Well done to all the students receiving their A level and Level 3 results today. A huge thank you from MEI to all the teachers and other staff in schools and colleges who have provided expert tuition and support to enable students to achieve their potential.

This year there has been a large increase in the number of students taking A level Mathematics and A level Further Mathematics.  Entries for A level Mathematics exceeded 100,000 students for the first time, an increase of over 10% on last year. Further Mathematics entries increased by 20%, more than any other A level subject, to over 18,000 students for the first time. The proportion of students achieving a top grade of A*, A or B in A level Mathematics was slightly higher than last year 61.3% compared to 60.9%. Of those taking A level Further Mathematics, 79.1% achieved one of the top grades, compared to 77.0% in 2023.

The number of students taking Core Maths increased slightly this year. from 12,367 to 12,810, with 40% of these students again achieving grades A or B.

MEI works to support schools and colleges to teach A level Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Level 3 Core Maths. Through its leadership of the AMSP, MEI promotes the benefits of studying maths and provides professional development for teachers to improve their subject knowledge and pedagogy. It is fantastic that such a large number of students are achieving these important qualifications which develop both maths skills and problem-solving skills, essential in preparing for higher education and employment.

The increases in entries for Mathematics and Further Mathematics are encouraging and suggest that more students are considering a career in STEM. Entries for A level Physics and A level Computing also increased by more than 10%.

Charlie Stripp, MEI Chief Executive and Director of the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics said:

Congratulations to the students and teachers of Core Maths and AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics on today’s results.

The increase in entries across all these maths qualifications is very encouraging, showing increasing numbers of young people are keen to study maths post-16 and appreciate the importance of maths education to their future success.  Through ongoing, high-quality support from the AMSP to promote the study of maths post-16 and expand teaching capacity for these qualifications, and government funding to support schools and colleges to expand their post-16 maths provision, we are making progress in expanding participation in maths education to age 18.

MEI has produced a summary of the entries for A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics in the UK and a summary of the entries for Core Maths.
