Overview

This live online course introduces A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics teachers to the maths and statistics behind machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI). Through hands-on activities using tools like Desmos and Python, teachers will explore data analysis, predictive modelling, and the role of maths in AI—while gaining ideas and resources to enrich classroom teaching.

Aims

  • To develop teachers' understanding of how mathematics and statistics underpin machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI)
  • To demonstrate how ideas related to machine learning and AI can be integrated into the teaching of A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics
  • To enable teachers' to enrich students’ learning using technology-based tools and techniques

Who will benefit from attending?

Any teacher who is interested in how the content of A level Mathematics/Further Mathematics is used in machine learning/AI or who wishes to make great use of technology-based tools in their teaching of data and statistics.

Content

All the sessions will feature information about how maths and data skills are used in data science/AI as well as learning activities that can be used in A level Maths/Further Maths classrooms. Individual sessions will feature aspects of:

  • Data analysis: how to use technology tools such as Desmos and Python for exploring data
  • Machine learning: how to use data to build predictive models and how machine learning algorithms work
  • Artificial intelligence: the importance of maths and data in the construction of AI

Materials and equipment

The live online lessons will take place in Zoom webinars. The technology tasks will use free web-based platforms such as Desmos or Kaggle.

Eligibility

This course is only open to teachers of A level Mathematics/Further Mathematics students from state-funded schools, colleges and academies in England.

We will be running the course again in the spring term, including a version aimed at Computing teachers.
