Overview
This event is a team Problem Solving competition for Year 12 and 13 Maths & Further Maths Students, inspired by the structure of the much-loved Senior Team Maths Challenge which was was run by the UKMT.
Aims
- To provide schools with a focus for promoting problem solving at KS5: ideally schools will use materials from previous years to engage students and select a team, prior to the event.
- To provide individual students with a focus for refining their problem solving skills, and raising their apspirations.
- To allow students to learn from each other, sharing their approaches to unfamiliar problems.
- To raise awareness of the University Admissions Tests, and the part they can play in university admissions
Who will benefit from attending?
Schools are invited to bring a team of 4 students (year 11 to 13). Due to the structure of the rounds, teams of less than 4 will be severely disadvantaged. Teams of more than 4 are not permitted.
Each team must be accompanied by a teacher/responsible adult. The accompanying adult will be asked to mark student work during the competition. It is not essential that they are a maths teacher, but it is definitely recommended (to optimise students' experience).
The maximum number of Year 13 students that can be in any team is two. We are aware that many schools will not feel able to bring Year 13s because of the timing in the academic year.
The maximum number of Year 11 students that can be in any team is two.
This event is not a "real" Senior Team Maths Challenge (updates on how the UKMT might plan to run it in future years will be posted here :https://ukmt.org.uk/team-challenges/senior-team-mathematical-challenge )
There is one other event taking place in London, but there will be no "National final" (as happens when the UKMT run their Team Challenge). Details of the event at Harris Clapham Sixth Form can be found here
