Overview

Our Core Maths Summer Festival is a series of online interactive workshops. Each session will provide contextualised resources and ideas which you can take straight to the classroom.

We would also love for you to join us at our Summer Conference in London on Friday 28th June.

Who will benefit from attending?

These sessions are designed to appeal to all teachers that wish to bring their contextualised maths lessons to life. No prior experience or knowledge of L3 Core Maths is required.

Content

Use of context in the maths classroom is essential but do you play it safe to avoid contention? Are you interested in addressing issues of social justice in your maths classroom but not sure where to start?

Use of social, cultural, political, and economic contexts can provoke deeper thinking and greater curiosity about the world and highlight the importance of maths in a fair society. In this session you will hear from Hafsa Farhana whose mathematics department has created a bank of resources that address a range of social issues. Hafsa strives to integrate the use of mathematics for social justice into her school's learning framework from Key Stage 3. You will leave with ideas and resources that will encourage collaborative problem solving and equip your learners to question inequality.

Speaker

Hafsa Farhana is a Secondary maths teacher and leader who has worked in a diverse school in London. Hafsa is an active participant in the Teaching Maths for Social Justice Network.

Cat van Saarloos is a Maths Education Support Specialist at MEI. She delivers courses on L3 Core Maths and maths in A level Psychology.

Materials and equipment

The sessions will take place via zoom. If you register for the session, you will be sent a zoom link one week before and on the day of the event.

We aim to emulate as much of the ‘face-to-face’ experience as possible and strongly encourage you to put your webcam on for some or all of the session. Please also come prepared to discuss and reflect for short periods in breakout rooms as this will be a feature of some of the sessions.

Due to the interactive nature of these events, they are not recorded. If you are looking for Core Maths PD that you can do in your own time we recommend our ‘On Demand Core Maths top-ups’.

Cost

The sessions are free of charge to all teachers in England.
