Overview

The Imperial mA*ths and Further mA*ths Project is professional development for Year 12 and 13 A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics teachers created with Imperial College London.

These exciting professional development courses are designed to prepare you to help your high-attaining students achieve an A* in A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

Explore in-depth aspects of maths content and pedagogy with the opportunity to attend a live masterclass as well as access on-demand modules via the AMSP.

The courses are designed to complement Imperial College London’s student mA*ths and Further mA*ths programmes; find out more by visiting Imperial’s website here.

Who will benefit from attending?

Open to all teachers of A level maths subjects from state-funded schools and colleges. Teachers with experience of teaching the topics will gain most benefit.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) courses in the top Russell Group universities often ask for an A* in A Level Mathematics and sometimes Further Mathematics. This may lead to the following questions:

  • What is the best way to identify “A* potential” in students studying these subjects?
  • What can you do to support students aiming for the top grades?
  • Are there other resources for self-study and extension you could point students to?

If you’re a teacher of A Level Mathematics or Further Mathematics in a state-funded school, particularly if some of your students are working with social disadvantage, our courses will help you support them to achieve their very best.

Content

Sessions on the day will run in three parallel strands, each covering an element of mA*ths or Further mA*ths and focussing on a theme:

  • Strand 1: AS level Maths (Year 12) with a calculus theme
  • Strand 2: A level Maths (Year 13) with a trigonometry theme
  • Strand 3: A level Further Maths (Years 12 and 13) with a complex numbers theme

You will be able to choose which of the three strands you wish to attend in parallel workshop sessions. There will also be common sessions for all teachers attending.

The in-person masterclasses at Imperial College London will complement these online courses in our On Demand Professional Development area:

It is expected that at least one of the on-demand courses will be completed before attending the in-person event. The in-person event will be run as an MEI and Imperial partnership

Eligibility

Open to all teachers of A level maths subjects from state-funded schools and colleges.
