Overview
Our Maths Mastery in an Adult Setting course focuses on the pedagogy of maths mastery aimed at teachers working within an adult setting. It covers all the key ingredients of teaching, learning and assessment needed to deliver the adult functional skills and GCSE maths resit curriculum.
Aims
- Develop an understanding of the expectations of the adult maths curriculum.
- Explore the needs of the learner and how to maximise opportunities for maths mastery.
- Learn about the principles of effective pedagogy for developing learners' skills including number sense, reasoning, fluency and problem solving.
- Apply mastery techniques to support maths in everyday contexts.
Who will benefit from attending?
Teachers and leaders of adult maths.Materials and equipment
You will be expected to join via an internet connected computer or tablet, using zoom. You will have access to resources via our Integral site.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this professional development course, you will be a teacher in either an adult college setting or other establishment delivering a functional skills or GCSE maths resit curriculum.
Study schedule
This course will run over 8 sessions, 4-5:30pm. There will be a brief assessment and reflection element.
Session Date | Content |
5/11/2024 | Engagement and Confidence Building Adult learners often come with maths ‘baggage’ – anxiety, low confidence, difficult experiences, and general fear of the subject. We will look at strategies for engaging learners and developing resilience and confidence. |
19/11/2024 | Assessing & Responding Adult classes can be made up from learners with a diverse range of prior experiences and knowledge. We will look at ways to assess skills and knowledge, diagnose misconceptions and respond to learners’ needs. |
3/12/2024 & 7/1/2025 | Representation and Structure In these sessions we will talk about the CPA approach and how representations and models can help learners ‘see’ and understand maths concepts. We will look at using representations including ratio tables and bar models to support students, reduce cognitive load and help give efficient ways of doing maths. |
21/1/2025 | Fluency & Variation In addition to recalling number facts, fluency requires learners to have the flexibility to recognise relationships and make connections between areas of maths. In this session we will explore approaches that help with fluency. Procedural and conceptual variation will be examined as a way of structuring learning. |
4/2/2025 & 11/2/2025 | Mathematical Thinking Problem-solving and reasoning are often a struggle for students. In these sessions we will look at different strategies to support with this by developing mathematical thinking and communication skills. |
4/3/2025 | Planning for Mastery We will look at planning a coherent learning progression, providing access for all students to develop a deep and connected understanding of mathematics. |
