Overview

The aim of the event to allow students to experience Mathematics beyond the scope of the GCSE classroom. This will allow them to see that Maths has many applications and opportunities and to consider careers that may directly or indirectly involve Maths.

This event is aimed at Y10 students who are capable of continuing with Maths after GCSE but may not currently be considering this as an option.

Aims

  • To inform students about all the maths options available to them after GCSE
  • To find out more about careers involving mathematics
  • To explore different areas of maths, beyond the GCSE curriculum

Who will benefit from attending?

The event is aimed at those students who would benefit from studying level 3 mathematics after GCSE, though you may want to consider other students within your school or college. It will inform students about their options for studying mathematics after GCSE. No knowledge of mathematics beyond that expected at Key Stage 3/4 will be assumed, challenge is provided via the context.

Content

The day will consist of interactive student workshops, an inspirational and interactive presentation, all providing students with the opportunity to explore mathematics beyond the curriculum.

  • Maths of Wonderland - Who was Charles Dodgson and how did he come to hide mathematical ideas in Alice in Wonderland?
  • The Power of Numbers - Prepare to be amazed by numbers. An introduction to number theory and a fun application of this part of mathematics
  • Space! What challenges do we face when we want to explore space? How do we overcome them?

Plus, students will have the opportunity to test their mathematical problem solving skills in our famous Dragon Quiz.
