Overview

Artificial intelligence (AI) is big news at the moment, but many students will be unaware that AI is heavily based on mathematics and statistics. In this two-session online course we will explore some of the key ideas that underpin AI and how you can integrate these into your teaching of statistics at GCSE, A level or Core Maths.

The first session will focus on how AI is derived from predictive modelling of data. We will use an accessible data analysis tool (CODAP) to introduce the ideas of exploratory data analysis and how to create predictive models.

In the second session, we will demonstrate how AI is built on models created using machine learning. We will use Python to build some models for data using machine learning. We will also consider some of the ethical issues around AI by considering what bias means in a data science context.

Technology will be used in both sessions but no prior experience of CODAP or Python is expected.

Please note that this course is about how artificial intelligence uses ideas from mathematics/statistics and will not cover how to use AI tools in teaching mathematics.

Aims

  • Introduce some of the key ideas of artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Consider how to integrate ideas relating to AI into the teaching of data and statistics.

Who will benefit from attending?

Any teacher of GCSE Mathematics, Core Maths or A level Maths who is interested in integrating ideas relating to artificial intelligence into their teaching of data and statistics.

Content

There will be two sessions of approximately 90 minutes each. The first session will take place on Monday January 8th, 2024, and the second will take place Monday January 15th, 2024. Please note that when you apply for the course you will automatically be registered for both sessions, so do not need to apply for them separately.
