A day of mathematical activities with the opportunity for students to meet enthusiasts of their own age and older.Aims
- To offer students a taste of maths beyond GCSE.
- To explore potential careers supported by maths qualifications.
- To provide information about maths courses available post-16.
- To have fun working on unusual maths problems and learning about new areas of maths.
Who will benefit from attending?
The event is aimed at those students who would benefit from studying level 3 mathematics after GCSE, though you may want to consider other students within your school or college. It will inform students about their options for studying mathematics after GCSE. No knowledge of mathematics beyond that expected at Key Stage 3 will be assumed, challenge is provided via the context.Content
- Taking Maths Further - A short talk about exploring maths, post-16 pathways and opportunities
- An investigation on calculators
- A workshop on mathematical braiding
- A practical team challenge
- A team quiz
- Playing video games in 3 and 4 dimensions - A talk by Matt Scroggs
Materials and equipment
Students will need to bring pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, protractor, Casio scientific calculator, a drink and a packed lunch (please do not include items containing nuts). Please could students wear their standard school uniform.Other information
Students must be accompanied by a teacher from their school who will remain responsible for them at all times.
Lunch will be provided for staff but not students.
Parking will be possible but number plates for vehicles will be required 2 weeks before the event. It will be possible for students to be dropped off without parking.
Students will spend some of the time working in teams with students from other schools.
Eligibility
Applications are welcome from state funded schools in Hertfordshire and Luton.
Spaces are limited for this event and we will accept maximum of 16 students and 2 teachers per organisation.
