A full day of enrichment workshops for Yr 10
Who will benefit from attending?
The event is aimed at those students who would benefit from studying level 3 mathematics after GCSE, though you may want to consider other students within your school or college. It will inform students about their options for studying mathematics after GCSE. No knowledge of mathematics beyond that expected at Key Stage 3 will be assumed, challenge is provided via the context.Content
Helices
See how GCSE maths can be extended into the realms of spirals and helices & boggle your mind with the geometry of helicoids.
Climate Challenge
Find out about the carbon cycle and how human activity is changing it. Investigate the impact this has on our climate and our oceans and how science and maths might offer some solutions.
Mathematical Card Tricks
"Card tricks" are a wonderful place where maths and magic meet! We will learn a series of tricks, which will be easy for you to reproduce at home to impress your family and friends. The mathematical secrets will all be revealed in the end but you will be challenged to see if you can unravel them yourself along the way!
Complex Numbers
What happens when you solve the square root of minus 1? This session will look at the use of Complex Numbers in real world scenarios and introduce students to the manipulation and representation of complex numbers.
Materials and equipment
Each attending school may bring 10 students and 2 staff. The day is aimed at higher level G.C.S.E. students from Yrs 10. All attendees should bring a packed lunch.Other information
Students must be accompanied by a teacher from their school who will remain responsible for them at all times.
Students should bring their own packed lunch.
Please note that this event is currently full but we will keep the applications open and put schools on a waiting list in case other schools drop out
