Overview

This inspiring event is primarily for female students who would benefit from studying Core Maths, A Level or Further Mathematics after GCSE.

Students will hear from a variety of female speakers, telling them of their mathematical journeys from school to further study and on into their careers.

The day will also provide students with an opportunity to engage in some real-world problem-solving, getting involved and working in small groups. No knowledge of mathematics beyond that expected at Year 10 will be assumed; challenge is provided via the context.

Aims

  • To inspire and encourage young women to careers in STEM.
  • To help pupils see the relevance and importance of Mathematics for future careers.
  • Showcase successful women at various stages of their career
  • To provide information about the different options at Level 3 with regards to Mathematics.

Step into the world of data science and discover the magic of mathematics through interactive activities. We'll explore fascinating concepts like statistics and odds, where numbers tell stories and help make decisions. Through fun, real-life examples and interactive discussions, this talk will show how data science powers everything from sports and social media to solving big global problems.

"Discover the Beauty of Aperiodic Tilings" workshop delivered by Petra Staynova (University of Derby)

Join us for an exciting session where we delve into the fascinating world of aperiodic tilings! Explore how mathematics and art combine in patterns that never repeat, from the groundbreaking Penrose tiles to the recent discovery of an aperiodic monotile by a Yorkshire artist. Through an engaging talk and hands-on activity, you’ll uncover the surprising properties of these extraordinary patterns and learn how curiosity drives mathematical discovery. This session combines creativity, problem-solving, and inspiration to highlight the boundless possibilities of STEM. Let’s uncover the artistry and science of tilings together!
