Overview

MEI’s Individual Professional Development (IPD) courses enable self-paced learning, which means that you can continue your professional development at your own pace and at times that suit you.

Places on the course are fully funded by the Department for Education as part of our FE Maths CPD programme. This means that the course is free to teachers within FE settings in England who enrol students under the government’s Condition of Funding Policy.

Teaching Functional Skills Maths (TFSM) is designed for those teaching Functional Skills Maths in a post-16 setting. The course has been developed by experienced Functional Skills Maths teachers and will support you to improve your subject knowledge and learn more about the principles of effective pedagogy.

Aims

  • To have subject knowledge relating to the functional skills maths curriculum.
  • To develop an understanding of the expectations of the functional skills maths curriculum.
  • Apply pedagogical strategies in the classroom and reflect on the impact of your professional practise.

Who will benefit from attending?

  • Teachers that are new to teaching Functional Skills Maths and looking to develop their practice
  • Experienced Functional Skills Maths teachers looking to enhance their teaching
  • Experienced maths teachers teaching Functional Skills Maths for the first time.

Content

    Via the on-demand modules, Participants will explore effective teaching and learning strategies, plan and prepare teaching sessions and develop approaches to engage and stretch students within Functional Skills Maths.

Materials and equipment

You will have access to recordings and resources via our learning platform Integral.

Other information

You can apply to either, or both, courses depending on your professional need.  You can return to the course materials within a year of registering.  Each course comprises of 10 units.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this fully funded professional development, you will be a teacher in one of the following post-16 settings in England that enrols students under the Condition of Funding policy:

  • Further education colleges
  • Sixth form colleges
  • Art, design and performing arts colleges
  • Specialist designated colleges

To be eligible for this fully funded professional development, you will be a teacher in a post-16 setting in England that enrols students for maths under the Condition of Funding policy.

Our IPD courses have been designed to replicate our flagship Live Online Professional Development (LOPD) courses as closely as possible. However, LOPD courses incorporate group learning and collaboration throughout; this valuable element which cannot be reproduced through IPD.
