Student enrichment is very important for ensuring that students remain engaged and interested in their studies. The Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP) offers a range of online events to ensure that students won’t miss out on enrichment in 2021. They’re all free of charge to state-funded schools and colleges in England, and many are taking place soon and are open for applications now.
Online Enrichment Events
The AMSP’s Online Enrichment Events are designed to engage Year 10 students while developing an area of GCSE Mathematics beyond the curriculum and will inform them about their options for studying maths after GCSE. There are two events planned for the spring and summer terms in 2021; both events will be repeated at different times to allow teachers to choose the event that best fits their timetable. Both events will develop students’ reasoning, problem-solving and communication skills, which are all vital for success at GCSE. Are you Psychic? will draw on students’ knowledge of probability to make decisions based on statistics. Making a Million! will use students’ knowledge of percentages to work out the best investment strategies.
Which Career?
The AMSP is also running Which Career? events for Year 10 students in March 2021, to coincide with National Careers Week and British Science Week. The events will inform students about how maths is used in a range of careers, and will highlight the importance of continuing to study maths after GCSE. There are two events on offer:
- Which Career? – Meet people working in different roles, which will feature three guests from different areas of the world of work who’ll talk about their careers and take questions from students via the Q&A function.
- Which Career? – How maths is used in different roles, where students get to choose the careers that they are most interested in, before trying questions relevant to that career and getting an insight into how maths is used in the work environment.
You can keep an eye out for more Which Career? events coming in the summer term on the AMSP events page.
Setting Out In Problem Solving
Due to high demand, the AMSP has added additional dates to its Setting Out In Problem Solving online events for students. This two-hour event is designed primarily as an introduction for Year 12 students who would like to develop their problem-solving skills, but the event is also suitable for teachers and Year 13 students who would like an introduction to problem solving and the use of university admissions tests. The content of this event includes techniques for tackling problems, writing up solutions to problem-solving activities and information about university entrance tests.
Maths Feasts
Although they’ll look slightly different this year, the AMSP is still running their popular Maths Feasts; this year they’re taking place online. Maths Feasts provide Year 10 students with a fun educational maths challenge and give them the opportunity to work on their communication, teamwork, mathematical and problem-solving skills. Attending a National Online Maths Feast allows schools to run their own feast in school if students are in, however students can still engage with materials from home through their remote learning, as materials will be sent to schools electronically before the event. This also enables schools to use the materials as they wish. Participating in a regional Live Online Maths Feast will enable a team to attend remotely ‘alongside’ other schools in their local area. Both types of Maths Feasts use the same materials, so students will not gain any additional benefits from attending both events.
