Free professional development opportunities with the AMSP

Posted on in News, Events

The AMSP has a range of courses starting in 2021 that are now open for applications. They’re all free of charge to teachers working in state-funded schools and colleges in England.

The AMSP’s comprehensive sustained courses run over six months and aim to develop your subject knowledge and pedagogical skills. Each course includes online study sessions, access to online resources, and support from course tutors. Choose from Teaching Statistics (TS1 and TS2), Teaching Mechanics (TM1 and TM2), Teaching Further Mathematics (TFM1), and Teaching Discrete Mathematics (TD2).

There’s also the AMSP’s suite of Live Online Professional Development (LOPD) courses, which aim to develop teachers’ confidence and encourage networking and interaction between teachers delivering the same subject. These courses are delivered in 60-90 minute sessions in an online meeting room. There’s a wide variety to choose from, including several that are relevant to GCSE Mathematics, as well as to A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and Core Maths.

In January 2021, the AMSP will run its Core Maths Winter Festival, featuring inspirational one-hour talks from Tim Harford, Rob Eastaway, and Angela Saini, who will explore subjects such as what sport can teach you about ranking and decision making, and what the data says about racial disparity and health. The festival is suitable for all secondary maths teachers regardless of Core Maths experience, and for teachers of other subjects that incorporate some mathematical content, such as Biology, Geography, and Social Science. Please share the details with your colleagues.
