Going Deeper with Primary Maths: Elegant solutions and making connections

Overview

This half-day interactive session explores how we can develop deep and sustained understanding and support children in achieving success in end of Key Stage assessments.

Aims

To consider what constitutes working at greater depth looks like in:

  • Lesson design
  • Independent practice
  • Children’s work
  • Classroom talk

Content

We will look at how lessons can be designed to encourage children to make connections between key mathematical concepts (e.g. fractions, ratio and proportion) and to think about the most elegant way to solve a problem.

There will be the opportunity to consider the role of questioning and also to look at questions on the end of KS2 test papers and what it means to solve them with ‘greater depth’.

We will consider the way we want to develop mathematical thinking and support children to make links between key areas of the curriculum so that they can work flexibly, applying strategies based on connected mathematical concepts.

Who will benefit from attending?

This course is designed for anyone wishing to develop their approaches with Year 6 children to ensure that they are able to apply their understanding to make sense of problems and use elegant solutions. You may be:

  • teaching Year 6
  • a teacher new to Year 6 or about to teach Year 6 for the first time
  • an experienced teacher looking to develop classroom approaches
  • leading maths and looking to increase the number of children achieving higher scores in maths
  • a maths subject leader

Benefits for you:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of the connections between different areas of the curriculum
  • Strategies for planning and teaching that encourage mathematical thinking at greater depth
  • Understanding of what ‘greater depth’ looks like in the way students work

Benefits for your school:

  • A more coherent approach to the teaching of maths
  • More students demonstrating a greater depth of understanding of the curriculum

Benefits for your students:

  • More opportunities to access work at greater depth
  • More efficient approaches to solving problems
  • Increased confidence in problem solving
