New research into post-16 maths reasoning skills – Can you help?

Posted on in News

We’re looking for schools and colleges to help with important research to help develop a better understanding of post-16 students’ reasoning and logical intuition.

In 2019, MEI was successful in a joint bid with the Mathematics Education Centre at Loughborough University to gain a grant that enabled Loughborough University to recruit a PhD student, Charli Campbell, with MEI providing support and input to her research. Charli is now beginning the second year of her PhD and is recruiting schools and colleges for her first major study.

Charli’s research involves comparing maths reasoning skills between three groups of students in Years 12 or 13:

  • those studying Level 3 Core Maths,
  • those who are studying A level Mathematics, and
  • those studying non-mathematics A levels.

The first study is planned for this October-November, with further studies following later in the academic year.

Further details about the research and what participating involves are available on this research study page. If you would like to sign up to this study, or a later one, please contact Charli Campbell via email [email protected]
