Overview

We are running this course as a hybrid between the two Teaching GCSE Mathematics courses: Number, Geometry and Statistics and Algebra, Ratio and Probability.

Teaching GCSE Mathematics is designed for those new to teaching GCSE Mathematics in secondary schools. The course will support your progression to become more confident about teaching GCSE Mathematics at foundation tier and offer a peek at some higher tier content.

The course will provide opportunities for developing questioning techniques as well as providing activities that can be used with students.

This course will run in the summer term. The two courses TGM: Algebra, Ratio and Probability (TGM: ARP) and TGM: Number, Geometry and Statistics (TGM: NGS) are planned to run from September 2024; these will offer a more complete coverage of the GCSE curriculum.

Aims

  • Increase confidence with the subject content covered within the GCSE mathematics foundation tier.
  • Learn more about the principles of effective pedagogy in mathematics teaching, with practical strategies and resources.
  • Provide support with applying these principles in the classroom.
  • Provide opportunities for reflection upon creating effective and engaging environments for learning mathematics.

Who will benefit from attending?

Teaching GCSE Mathematics is designed for teachers who wish to develop both their subject knowledge and classroom practice in maths at GCSE level. You may be:

  • a newly, or recently, qualified maths teacher looking to continue your professional development.
  • a maths teacher returning to the classroom.
  • an experienced teacher of KS3 maths who wishes to learn more about GCSE Mathematics.
  • wanting to develop your own subject knowledge to enable you to confidently teach foundation tier GCSE Mathematics.
  • already teaching GCSE Mathematics in Key Stage 4 and looking to enhance your teaching.
  • a specialist in another subject who has been asked to teach Year 9, 10 or 11 maths lessons.

Support for non-specialist mathematics teachers is also available through the NCETM, through your local Maths Hub. Our Teaching GCSE Mathematics course is designed to complement this and the principles of Teaching for Mastery are embedded within our sessions.

If you are teaching resit students in a post-16 setting, you may want to follow our Teaching GCSE Mathematics resit (TGMr) course.
