Meet the Digging for the Why? Hosts

Andy Lumley

Head of Learning Technology at MEI, former teacher with 20 years of experience in state-run and independent schools. Andy is passionate about making maths fun, and inspiring more young people to study maths further.

Alison Hopper

Primary Maths Specialist at MEI, experienced KS2 teacher, lecturer, and maths enthusiast. Alison has a particular focus on the transition from KS2 to KS3 and is fascinated by how children make sense of maths.

Explore Season One

Season one of ‘Digging For The Why’ explores the transition from KS2 to KS3 and how asking why can help with continuity across years 5 to 8. We delve into topics including creating and managing the classroom atmosphere, teaching for mastery, why teaching tricks are a no-no and much more.

Season one features a variety of special guests, including Tom Button, Vick Osbourne, Tom Rainbow, Richard Perring, Alison Clark-Wilson and Steph Kirk. Plus, a special episode on the Oak Project that was recorded live at the annual MEI conference.

Season two takes the Why? to a broader audience beyond just mathematicians and to all educational professionals from a whole range of fields. Taking a more pedagogical approach, we delve deeper into asking ‘Why?’ and explore topics including the changing perceptions of maths education, rethinking classroom dynamics, the shifting culture around maths education, and much more.

Season two features NEW special guests: Ben Sparks, Alex Bellos, Catriona Agg, Ed Southall, Susan Okereke and our very own Charlie Stripp.
